Since the development of land in the Permian Basin to extract oil and gas over the past 100 years, the dry, arid land has been left severely disturbed. In recent years, landowners and government officials have become more aware of this impact and have focused on protecting and restoring this land.

The Permian Basin

The Permian Basin is a large sedimentary basin covering nearly 86,000 square miles from West Texas to southeastern New Mexico. Well known for its rich petroleum, natural gas, and potassium deposits, the Permian Basin is a leading producer for crude oil and natural gas in the US. As of 2018, over 33 billion barrels of oil and 118 trillion cubic feet of natural gas have been produced in this site.

Goals of Reclamation

The goal for land reclamation in the Permian Basin is to restore and repair sites damaged by construction and intrusive activities related to oil and gas production. This process can be done in numerous ways, including the revegetation of native plants to control erosion and recover land quality.

After decades of developing on and drilling into this land, the process of restoring the Permian Basin will take significant effort from those involved. While progress has been made to raise awareness and limit disturbances, a lot will be required to see improvement.

The primary goals of land reclamation are to:

  • Restore stability of the land
  • Improve ecosystem functions and wildlife habitats
  • Return disturbed lands to their original use
  • Improve quality of soil
